"I Have Lived Before: The True Story of the Reincarnation of Shanti Devi" by Sture Lonnerstrand

By Robin Ohara

The best documented and subsequently authenticated case of reincarnation ever written about, "I Have Lived Before," is the story of one soul's life, death, in between lives, and rebirth that was so interesting and compelling that Ghandi got involved with Shanti Devi's story. Ghandi was so fascinated with the story that he encouraged further experiments and writings about this landmark case of past life regression without the use of hypnosis.

Reincarnation is the foundation of both Hinduism and Buddhism. It was even part of the Christian religion for several hundred years, until a meeting in Constantinople brought the era to an end. All religions who believe in life after life have some sort of proof of reincarnation, and the comfort of proof that the soul survives on after death of the physical body.

In this story of Shanti Devi, she tells the story of being born and growing up in Muttra, India, miles south of Delhi. She died in childbirth on October 4th, 1925. A little over one year later, she reincarnated to another girl's body, this time in Dehli. At the age of four she started talking about her husband and asked how her son was, at six years old, while being dressed by her mother, she gave a detailed account of what kinds of clothes she used to wear, what she used to eat, and a very detailed description of her former husband and the location of his cloth shop. Both families were able to verify her remarkable story.

Skeptic's love proof and this book is compelling proof that this little girl really lived in another time. She is able to meet her former husband, and upon entering her old home knew the entire layout and even remembered where she had hid some money. The reader even gets to find out what it was like for her to meet her son-who is one year older than her.

Perhaps the most interesting and most comforting of Shanti Devi's story of Hindu reincarnation is what happened to her soul during the in between times-the year she spent as an ethereal soul, waiting patiently to be reincarnated. Her story is one of calmness and hope, and a breath of fresh air for those grieving the death of a loved one, or experiencing one's own mortality due to physical complications. I believe that it is also important here to point out that Shanti Devi believes that it is a blessing that our past lives are forgotten. It was desperately hard for her to leave her parents from her first life and go back with her current parents. If you are afraid and alone, Shanti Devi's book provides answers and healing that you must read for yourself.

I think that this story is amazing and some people may find it hard to believe, but I believe it in full entirely. The fact that she can remember her former life is the most amazing thing, because most people that believe in reincarnation or believe that they were reincarnated don't think that you'll have any recollection of anything of your previous life, let alone with so much detail.

I was inspired by Shanti Devi's story. I have battled whether to believe in reincarnation whole-heartedly for some time now, and being a "recovering Christian" is the basis for much of my dilemma. But reading, just in part, Devi's story has helped me to move further on my path in recognizing just how far the rabbit hole goes. The Universe is truly dynamic.

I was inspired by Shanti Devi's story, because I have lost a brother, and I am fascinated by the fact that reincarnation can happen, but it would be good if we can find the person after reincarnation, just to see them.

I believe in her story and this is one that proves why I have a strong belief in reincarnation. My friend remembers with perfect details the day he was born. It's amazing. Thanks for sharing your life with us.

I fully believe the rebirth, since reincarnation is only for some divine Souls who come to earth for special purpose like Lord Krishna, Lord Rama etc. of Shanthi Devi and recently a lot of research was done and it is believed to be authentic. Studies are done in Nimhans Bangalore, Dr.Satwant Pasricha, and Dr.Ian Stevenson of Virginia University, USA who have proved many cases in their books "Whether the Mind Survives Death," and "Reincarnation and Biology Intersect." Even whoever reads Sri.Paramahansa Yoganandji's Autobiography of Yogi, can also come to fully understand the phenomena of Rebirth. So, in this way, the Sacred Vedic Living of Hindus is the best way of living in the world and we should try to learn and live in that way by being more Spiritual and less Materialistic. Along with this, many books are also written on Near Death Experiences (NDEs) and transmigration of Souls, Parakaya Pravesh done by his Holiness Shankaracharya and many more. In this scientific age, many people do not believe this, but even, there is a limit for Science and somewhere it has to merge in Spirituality and physics into Metaphysics. Ultimately, by 'inner journey' of mind through Spirituality, man has to realize the secrets of this Universe and that science cannot invent the Creator, and if it does, it is doomed and with it the whole world. Like this, we must be grateful to our ancient Saints and Rishis who were having many Yogic powers, which are still a challenge to the science. It is a fact that Almighty God wants to keep certain secrets, always in eternity, and as and when the need comes to live peacefully on earth, God will reveal then and there. Man keeps coming to earthly life, to fulfill his unfulfilled desires and hence one need not fear death and feel sad about unfulfilled desires, but tread the righteous path of living.

If we do good karma soul shall take birth of human, if not in other living beings. This is still un-answered by all saints, yogis, and every one. There is no proof to depict this, once some proof comes to known then I think people shall think of doing bad things. If any evidence that a particular soul has re-incarnated in some animal body, still this is a debatable thing in the world, which no yogi, saint, or prophet is able to prove. Live after death is un-answered till the date since the birth of mankind on this earth.

Dear Robin, my comments are not related to whether I believe in re-birth or not. But it is about "Ghandi". I am not sure if you are referring to the great personality, but if you are, then you might want to correct it to "Gandhi", if not "Mahatma Gandhi." I understand you pronounce it differently over there, but it still does not change the fact that his name should be written as what it is. You can pronounce my name as Abiji because I didn't do anything for the Freedom of India. But Mahatma Gandhi did. A little respect please.

I believe that a person who is less than say 2-3 years remembers the past life and the child plays as if he or she is that person. Then we forget these 2-3 years totally and start afresh with the parents of this life. Imagine one living with the old life in which your mother was your brother or sister! Difficult, similarly those who live long enough to start forgetting this life's past, start seeing the people in "after death" life, the ancestors in spirit form, who come to meet the dying person. Only he or she can see them clearly because the link to present life is as good as broken. Phenomenon of re-birth exists for those who die in accidents and in violent action, specially those who did not live life fully.

It seems that real surname Gandhi was Ghandi and sometime in last century it was changed to Gandhi, This may require some authority from people of Gujrath.
