Strong Leo Energies
The astrological chart of Barack Obama shows he is a Leo. Even the most cursory glance at his chart makes this obvious. What might not be so clear is how much of a Leo he is and what difference this makes. It isn’t simply a matter of his having the Sun in Leo, although he does. The Sun is also widely conjunct his Leo midheaven; is the most strongly dignified planet in his chart; has no dispositor detracting from it, is the almuten of the tenth house and is the hyleg according to both Bonatti’s and Ptolemy’s methods of calculation. And, in case we still haven’t got the point, he also has Mercury and Mars in Leo. That’s a lot of Leo.
Even those people with only a small allocation of Leo want to rule the world, although that might be only the small world they live in. Of course, not everyone can. In this case, the big question on everyone’s mind is whether Obama has enough of that leonine energy to make him an effective leader in the bigger world.
What we can be certain of is that a Leo quality underpins much of what he does and is integral to Baracks’s image and what he can achieve professionally. Leos commonly do well in public life. They have a particular type of charisma that appeals to the world at large.
Powerful Public Speaker
In 2004, Barack Obama delivered the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention while still an Illinois state legislator. His speech, which he wrote himself (Mercury) earned him several standing ovations and was broadcast to the rest of the nation. Cameras scanned the crowd to show tears on the faces of delegates. That speech was Obama's introduction to much of America and its enthusiastic reception and widespread coverage by the media gave him instant celebrity status.
The Oprah Factor
Shortly after the convention, Barack was interviewed by Oprah Winfrey and asked how he’d become such an eloquent public speaker. He said that he’d known from an early age that he had a career in the persuasive arts ahead, saying in The Oprah Magazine, "I always knew I could express myself. I knew I could win some arguments. I knew I could get my grandparents and mom frustrated!"
Obama: The Rock-Star
Barack Obama began to win public opinion polls among every demographic group surveyed and was even greeted with rock-star type cheers in rural Illinois farm towns. After being sworn in to the Senate in 2005, Barack focused his energies on his home state with the intention of staying out of the limelight. In the first few months, he held 39 town hall meetings--whatever his intention, Obama was not going to remain in the background.
In October 2005, an article in the British New Statesman magazine listed Barack Obama as one of "ten people who could change the world." In 2005 and again in 2007, Time magazine named him one of "the world's most influential people." Barack was also recognized outside the media. During his first three years in the Senate, he received honorary doctorates of law from six different universities.
Saturn/Jupiter Conjunction
Obviously, the Leo influence isn’t the only thing to consider. In terms of leadership, the Saturn/Jupiter conjunction in Capricorn suggests a combination of persistence with vision, his Scorpio ascendant indicates a strong determination, and Mars is trine Saturn showing someone who takes action and can get things done. The third house position of this conjunction shows a serious mindedness and a tendency to withhold thoughts and opinions until he has thought everything through thoroughly.
The Barack Obama astrology chart shows that he understands the value of hard work and isn’t averse to challenges, shown by the oft reported quotation, “'It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get to where we are today, but we have just begun. Today we begin in earnest the work of making sure that the world we leave our children is just a little bit better than the one we inhabit today.”
Big Dreams
With the Sun and midheaven in Leo, Obama has big dreams and the vitality to bring them into being. He wants to stand out from the crowd and his urge for greatness and to have an adoring audience motivates him further forward. It’s important to remember that although he appears self-confident, he depends on the support and recognition of those around him.
He needs to be influential and make his mark--the bigger the better. He wants to make a major contribution and be recognized for it. From when he was young, personal success and achievement were very important to him. All Leos have a tendency to be egocentric, craving admiration and respect. With this emphasis in his chart, Barack won’t be able to tolerate being in the background or taking orders from others for long.
Enthusiasm
His sheer enthusiasm means that at times he will dominate people and situations. This ability coupled with a keen sense of drama and love of display puts him at the forefront of everything that happens and helps to increase his popularity. He feels called to develop his own personal identity and story, and as part of that, Leo drives him towards a desire to take over the world, or whatever bits he can of it.
Mercury in Leo
His ninth house Mercury in Leo shows that his thought process and communication style rely on pride and ego. There is a strong sense of purpose with Mercury in Leo, and a sense of mission to accomplish great things. The horoscope for Barack Obama depicts why he is proud of his learning abilities. As a child, Obama attended local schools in Jakarta, Indonesia, from the age of six to ten where classes were taught in the Indonesian language. Later a graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, Barack worked as a community organizer, university lecturer, and civil rights lawyer before entering politics.
Mercury/Neptune Square
The square between Mercury and Neptune in Barack Obama's horoscope indicates that he has strong opinions and can express his views energetically and often dramatically. An entertaining speaker, he also has an aptitude for story telling. Obama has written two books - his autobiography, Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance and The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream, a personal commentary on American politics.
The title of his second book is echoed in the opposition between Mercury and Jupiter, hope being a keyword for Jupiter. This aspect shows a tendency for over-optimistic thinking. At their time of publication, his books received only a lukewarm reception and soon went out of print.
This theme of this book was at the heart of Barack's address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention and was inspired by his pastor. With the opposition between Mercury and Jupiter, a religious challenge could be expected to underpin Barack Obama’s personal beliefs. Obama has stated that he was not raised in a religious household. His father was raised as a Muslim, but was a confirmed atheist by the time his parents met. In his twenties, Barack, while working with local churches as a community organizer, came to understand "the power of the African American religious tradition to spur social change." He added, "It was because of these newfound understandings--that religious commitment did not require me to suspend critical thinking, disengage from the battle for economic and social justice, or otherwise retreat from the world that I knew and loved--that I was finally able to walk down the aisle of Trinity United Church of Christ one day and be baptized."
Neptune Squares His Sun
The astrology chart of Barack Obama makes clear that his Neptune also squares his Sun. This suggests a possibility of scandal affecting his public image. Obama’s religious beliefs have remained an issue with his aides sharply disputing stories suggesting that he was a Muslim. The campaign keeps a letter at its offices, signed by five members of the local clergy, vouching for his Christian faith. Barack has actively touted his Christianity, aware that in the present climate of anti-Muslim feeling, it could be disastrous to his campaign to be seen as anything other than Christian.
The Sun/Neptune square further shows that there is an element of confusion in his mind when it comes to developing an individual identity. Neptune is, of course, associated with drugs. Barack Obama has talked candidly about his drug use in his student days. The Leo Sun is again emphasized here as Obama stated that he took drugs to "push questions of who I was out of my mind."
Mars in Virgo
It’s worth remembering here that the traditional ruler of drugs is Mars, which is in Virgo. The square to Neptune may go some way to explaining the temptation to take drugs, but Mars’ placement in clean living Virgo shows why it was unlikely that Barack would settle into a drug taking lifestyle. This is echoed in his publicized efforts to give up smoking, although Obama claims to have never been a heavy smoker.
The square between the Sun and Neptune is less of a problem when the Sun is in a fixed sign like Leo--at least, according to the Barack Obama horoscope, he can convince himself of that. The word "inspirational" has been used to describe both Obama and his run for nomination. The concept of inspiration is associated with Neptune. Additionally, Baracks Obama's natal chart Neptune is exactly conjunct the United States Scorpio ascendant, allowing a connection between his vision and the American people.
Although scandal has arisen in Barack Obama’s political career, it has primarily been related to his opponents. In 2004, Jack Ryan withdrew from his bid for the Senate after unsubstantiated sexual allegations were made by his ex-wife, actress Jeri Ryan.
This does not mean that Obama has been completely free from rumors of scandal. In March 2007 it was reported by the New York Times that Barack had invested more than $50,000 worth of stock in two companies whose major investors included some of his largest political donors. Spokesman Bill Burton stated that Barack Obama "did not know that he had invested in either company until fall 2005, when he learned of it and decided to sell the stocks... He sold them at a net loss of $13,000." The suggestions of impropriety should relate to money is particularly fitting when we notice that Neptune additionally makes a wide trine to Venus, the ruler of money, placed in the eighth house of other people’s money.
Although the Sun falls in the ninth house, it’s close enough to the midheaven so that it can’t really be separated from it. The conjunction between the Sun and midheaven shows how important his career, reputation, and public image is to Obama’s very being. All that leonine energy could get a little uncontrolled if it weren’t for Baracks’s Mars being in Virgo. Although Mars isn’t especially at home in this sign, the humility associated with Virgo and focus on serving others, reduces some of the potential arrogance gifted by Leo. It also introduces a conflict, as Virgo tends to try to avoid the limelight.
Mars in Virgo also shows a desire for perfection in the details of life. High standards and a feeling that if he wants something done right he must do it himself, means that he might labor over minute details that others wouldn't bother with. Fortunately, Mars is also in the eleventh house, so the horoscope of Barack Obama shows us he is a team player that can work well in collaboration with others who share his goals, ideals, and intentions. He’s prepared to put his own house in order before attempting to work on others. Once he’s made a commitment, he will want to do it even if it takes forever by choosing practical, realistic goals and pursuing them step-by-step in a well-planned, orderly way.
Energy & Health
Mars also rules energy. In March 2006, Barack Obama began to express his own view of US energy policy. He began by offering the big three US auto manufacturers a deal to get more fuel-efficient vehicles to market. His plan relied on the federal government to "pay 10 percent of the $6.7 billion in annual health costs for retirees that are weighing down General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler if they'll commit to building more fuel-efficient cars." This connection between health and energy is extremely apt for a Virgo Mars.
Health issues have arisen again and again in Barack’s work. Prior to being elected to Senate, Barack Obama worked with both Democrats and Republicans in drafting legislation on ethics, expanded health care services and early childhood education programs for the poor. After being sworn into office in 2005, Obama began to serve on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committees. He was the first to raise the threat of avian flu on the Senate floor and spoke out for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Shortly before announcing his presidential campaign, Barack told the health care advocacy group Families USA: "I am absolutely determined that by the end of the first term of the next president, we should have universal health care in this country."
Scorpio Ascendant
Mars being in the eleventh house suggests an involvement in team sports. Barack Obama plays basketball, a sport he participated in as a member of his high school's varsity team. The Mars theme continues when we consider Obama’s ascendant in Scorpio. On the surface, this imbues a strong sense of will power and pride. Under the surface is a great deal of emotional depth, sensitivity, complexity and fierce determination. When he wants something he goes after it quietly but insistently and wholeheartedly--and usually gets it. The Scorpio influence makes Barack's self-protective and often defensive. He usually has strong, immediate gut reactions, either positive or negative, which prove to be correct. He approaches life very instinctively and is not always fully conscious of why he feels or acts as he does.
Scorpionic issues have been raised in Barack Obama’s campaigning, for examples, his attitude towards the death penalty. He has shown that he has an awareness of his own secretive traits, when asked by Associated Press in 2008 to name a "hidden talent," Obama answered: "I'm a pretty good poker player."
The ability to function well in crisis situations is derived from the combination of the Scorpio ascendant along with the Jupiter/Saturn conjunction in the third house. The astrological chart for Barack Obama makes clear he isn’t averse to challenge, danger, or to facing the darker side of life. In fact, he may even seek out crises for he enjoys the feeling of living at full capacity.
Reconciles Opposing Views
The Jupiter/Saturn conjunction shows idealism tempered with a dose of realism. Although some work is required on his part to achieve the best effects of this combination--as it is an out of sign conjunction--this can give him the ability to understand and reconcile opposing views. It can bridge the gap between the Capricornian conservatives and the Aquarian liberals.
Jupiter additionally opposes Mercury and trines the Moon. This indicates that his message (Mercury) of change, hope, and faith (Jupiter) appeals to the population (Moon). It’s optimistic and broad based, and with the Moon's influence allows him to connect to his audiences on an emotional level.
The trine between Mars and Saturn means that Barack is someone who can get things done instead of simply blustering. It adds a sense of practical discipline and the awareness that true success comes from hard work and persistence. The sense of responsibility from this combination is powerful in terms of granting success. The position of Uranus in the tenth house also affects how Obama deals with his public life. He feels driven to challenge the mainstream of society and upset the status quo. He is directed towards progressive change and can’t help but shake things up.
As the highest-ranking black elected official in the USA, Barack Obama has positioned himself as the candidate who can best change the status quo (Saturn). His background offers a multiplicity of different cultural experiences that he can draw on. Born to a Kenyan father and an American mother, as mentioned earlier, young Barack spent part of his life living in Indonesia.
Civil Service
In 1990, Barack Obama was elected president of the Harvard Law Review journal. He was the first African American to serve in the post and could have taken almost any career path he chose after graduation. Instead of taking the job offers he received from top Manhattan law firms, he returned to Chicago to work for a small firm that specialized in civil-rights law. Although an unglamorous field of law, this unconventional choice would allow Obama to reap long-term benefits that went beyond the financial, shown by the quincunx between Saturn and Uranus.
His political supporters come from a diverse range of racial and economic backgrounds, which is unusual in American electoral politics, as traditionally, black candidates don’t do well in voting precincts where predominantly non-minority voters go to the polls.
Venus in Cancer
His Venus in Cancer, the sign of nurturing and family roots, show Baracks’s strong ties to his family. In 2001, Obama lost a bill when he had to miss a vote because of returning home when his daughter was ill, leading to his commitment being questioned by some commentators.
Venus in Cancer gives him a strong desire to create unity, and focus on commonalities rather than differences, and is likely a contributing factor in his widespread appeal to the public. It signifies, among other things, love of one’s country--patriotism, emphasized further by the loyalty accorded by the Leo influence. Barack Obama continues to state that he seeks unity. “There's not a liberal America and a conservative America. There's the United States of America…We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the Stars and Stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.”
Moon in Gemini
A seventh house Moon in Gemini suggests that Barack may be unaware of his own or other people's deeper feelings and emotional needs, taking a rational approach towards settling differences. Any potential problems caused by this combination are mitigated with the Moon’s trine to Saturn, which offers an inner poise, enabling him to act in a cool, efficient manner when under stress. The additional trine to Jupiter gives an element of compassion and contributes towards Obama’s desire to fulfill his civic duty.
Although the Moon also squares Uranus, the effect of the Saturn/Jupiter trine pushes Barack Obama into a position where he feels obliged to respect social rules and traditions. He is unlikely to promote change for the sake of change, preferring instead to consider (Saturn) whether or not it is for the greater good (Jupiter).
As of this writing in 2008, Barack is in the Saturn/Venus firdaria, which began in November 2007 and continues until June 2009. The shift from the Saturn/Sun period means that he is less likely to be focused on his own needs, and suggests a lightening of the Leo energy discussed above. Saturn will be at the basis of all of his campaigning, with an appeal to tradition and adherence to the status quo. (Obama’s Jupiter period does not begin until 2012.) The influence of Venus further emphasizes issues of unity and family values and shows that he is most likely to achieve success by continuing to focus on these issues.
Michelle Obama
Barack "Barry" Hussein Obama, Jr. married Michelle Robinson (born January 17th, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois) on October 18th, 1992. The Reverend Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois performed Barack and Michelle's wedding ceremony.
Barack and Michelle have two daughters: Malia Ann Obama was born in 1999 and Natasha Obama was born in 2001.
