The Mother of Reflexology

Mother of Reflexology Eunice InghamEunice D. Ingham (1889—1974) is known as a pioneer—or more affectionately as the mother of reflexology—in holistic health and wellness fields. Through her work as a physiotherapist and trained massuese, Ingham developed an interest in the then-new subject of zone therapy, or the practice of stimulating one pint in the body for a reaction or result in another.

By the 1930s she had developed her own therapeutic treatment process on the feet. This therapy, known as the Ingham Method, was based on the tender spots of the feet and the basic anatomy of the body. Ingham was passionate about exploring how the feet are maps of the anatomical body and its systems. From this she developed what is known, practiced, and revered around the world today as the field of reflexology.

Ingham gained popularity for her groundbreaking research and therapies, and travelled around the globe speaking on the benefits of her approaches. To continue her legacy for future generations, the International Institute of Reflexology was established, and today is served by president Dwight C. Byers, Ingham’s nephew and former student.
