Bill Gates' Investments
Bill Gates, the world's richest man, announced last Thursday that he will be spending more time overseeing his philanthropic foundation, and decreasing his day-to-day involvement with Microsoft. With $29 billion in assets, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the nation's largest charitable organization. Gates is following in the steps of Andrew Carnegie, America's first billionaire, who also devoted his later years to philanthropy.
Bill Gates was born with his Sun square Uranus (October 28, 1955; 9:15 pm*; Seattle, WA), an aspect shared by many billionaires, including Andrew Carnegie. The Sun-Uranus dynamic ensures that the individual follows his own vision and genius. With Gates' Sun conjunct the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant, his personal path transformed the national agenda by putting a personal computer on everyone's desk.
Last Thursday, transiting Mars and Saturn were nearly conjunct in Leo, where they squared his Sun and formed a close trine to his tenth house Moon. As Gates shifts directions, so too does the corporate empire he built. Unseen to all but asteroid lovers was Vesta, which by transit was between Mars and Saturn, so that Vesta helped define the shift in his professional direction.
Vesta, best known for its workaholic and devotional tendencies, is also associated with investments. With his Vesta in the fourth house, Gates inherited a charitable side from his parents, as reflected in The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which was officially established on August 22, 1999. At the time, transiting Vesta was exactly conjunct Gates' natal Vesta (and his progressed Vesta exactly conjunct natal Mercury). Now, as Gates turns toward his Foundation, life-transforming Pluto is squaring his Vesta.
Wikipedia's Collective Intelligence
Wikipedia, the web's third most-popular news and information source, is going through growing pains. Last week, the administrators implemented slight changes in its "anyone can edit" policy due to continuous vandalism. The new directive affects only 82 of the 1.2 million entries, putting them on a "protected" list. Still, the changes reflect the inherent challenges facing an idealistic online community.
Wikipedia's first entry was made on January 16, 2001 (1:08 pm**; San Diego, CA), and a chart set for this moment defines the collective entity. Gemini Rising shows that the group's main interest is in knowledge and information. With Jupiter right on the Ascendant, the participants are generally enthusiastic and eager to contribute – all of which has led to rapid expansion and new opportunities.
Jupiter trines Neptune in Aquarius, adding tremendous idealism for the Aquarian values of shared responsibility and anti-elitism. This trine describes the collective intelligence embodied in Wikipedia, which is further supported by Mercury (the ruler of the chart) and Uranus near the Aquarius Midheaven. At the foundation of the chart is 13º Leo, which is the precise degree of founder Jimmy Wales' Sun (born August 7, 1966).
Wikipedia's chart presents some difficult problem areas: notably, jealousy and envy (Venus square Pluto), and intense bickering (Mercury square Mars in Scorpio). Also, Mars squares the Leo-Aquarius MC-IC axis, activating the central challenge of the Aquarian Age, namely, how the individual needs interface with the collective's needs. As transiting Saturn edges toward the IC, expect to see more fundamental changes over the next few months.
Britney Spears Chased by Pluto
Mel Gibson recently put his $18 million Malibu mansion up for sale because his next-door neighbor, Britney Spears, attracts a steady stream of fans and rude photographers. Last week, the beleaguered, pregnant pop star defended her relationship with husband Kevin Federline when interviewed by Dateline's Matt Lauer. But then she broke down in tears when asked about being harassed by the paparazzi.
When NewsScope last covered Britney (April 19, 2005), she was experiencing a progressed New Moon, which led to her dramatic exit from the music business to become a mother. Her current set of problems can be seen in the activation of her natal Mars-Neptune square, which relates to her rumored splits with Kevin, as well as the predatory paparazzi.
Britney (December 2, 1981; 1:30 am; Mahon, GA) has Mars in the 12th house of isolation, and Mars here is the ruler of her 7th house of partners. Mars has great difficulty in making headway in the professional world, and this is Kevin's personal challenge – to make it on his own. Transiting Pluto has been squaring this Mars over the last two years, leading to balance-of-power issues between the two.
Britney's 12th house Mars can also be seen as men hiding in the bushes. They have cameras with zoom lenses, indicated by the square to Neptune, the ruler of photography. Transiting Pluto has been hovering around Britney's Neptune over the last year, adding the "relentless" factor to their pursuit. Pluto is now retrograde, but turns direct during the first week of September at 24º05 Sagittarius, only 0º03' from the exact conjunction with Britney's Neptune. Something's got to give....
* Astrologers use a variety of birth times for Gates, ranging from 9:15 pm to 10:00 pm. I prefer the 9:15 pm, with the most recent evidence being that transiting Mercury (announcements) was exactly conjunct his 18º Cancer Ascendant last Thursday.
