Bird Flu Pandemic?

Last week U.S. Health Secretary Mike Leavitt completed a fact-finding mission to Asia, and concluded that it would be virtually impossible to prevent the outbreak of a flu pandemic. While bird flu rarely spreads from person to person, it could mutate, as it did in the 1918-19 pandemic which killed some 50 million people worldwide. Could the astrological influences during the outbreak of the 1918 event serve as a guide to current potential?

Many researchers believe it began in Kansas on March 11, 1918, and spread throughout the world via military campaigns. The main feature of this date is a Saturn-Neptune conjunction in Leo, which squares the Scorpio Ascendant in the U.S. horoscope. Also, transiting Uranus opposes the U.S. Moon, reflecting the sudden crisis (Uranus) for the American populace (Moon).

The presence of a Saturn-Neptune aspect is worrisome since Saturn and Neptune are now nearly opposite each other. Next year Saturn opposes Neptune as the two align with the U.S. Midheaven. The problem with concluding that this will lead to a severe outbreak of influenza is that Saturn and Neptune regularly make contact with each other, with a hard aspect arriving about every nine years.

The U.S. was hit by two other, more minor pandemics in 1957 and 1968. The 1957 wave featured transiting Uranus in Leo squaring the U.S. Scorpio Ascendant and transiting Neptune in Scorpio near the Ascendant. In 1968 transiting Neptune was squaring the U.S. Moon. All these incidents have Neptune in common, but otherwise show no distinctive, unique pattern using the traditional planets. With Neptune now opposite the U.S. Midheaven, all we can say is that it's possible.

Warren Beatty Changes Careers

When Hollywood actors become politicians, all the world is truly a stage. In the tradition of Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger, "Bulworth" star Warren Beatty has been testing the political waters during the run-up to this November's ballot measures in California. Rampant speculation imagines a 2006 election campaign between Schwarzenegger and Beatty, and Beatty hasn't ruled it out.

Like actor George Clooney, Warren Beatty was born with Juno Rising (March 30, 1937; 5:30 pm; Richmond, VA). The partnership asteroid on the Ascendant generally indicates a charming, magnetic personality, and a preference for meeting life with a significant other. In Beatty's case his Juno opposes Saturn, so it took a long time before he settled down from his playboy lifestyle.

Beatty's Aries Sun resides in the seventh house of partners and the general public, underscoring his reliance on "others" to further his own aspirations. Still, being an Aries, and with his Sun trine Mars, Beatty can get what he wants by cajoling and persuading the public along his preferred path. His wife, Annette Bening (May 29, 1958), is currently experiencing the electrifying, exciting transit of Uranus squaring her Sun.

Over the next year, Beatty will be experiencing a progressed New Moon, marking the completion of a 29-year cycle, and a new beginning. This lunation takes place high in his chart, and exactly square his Neptune, the planet of hopes and dreams. One can see his waning career as an actor, and the hopeful new life as a politician. Watch for clues from Annette and California polls to see if he'll run in 2006.

Daniel Craig, The Next James Bond

After months of speculation, the next actor to play the suave superspy James Bond was finally announced last week. He's the first blond Bond, English actor Daniel Craig. While not exactly a household name, he's currently filming a thriller with Nicole Kidman, and just emerged from a tabloid affair with Jude Law's ex, British beauty Sienna Miller.

Daniel Craig was born with his Sun in the chameleon sign of Pisces (March 2, 1968; Chester, UK; time unknown), and a formidable Mars-Saturn conjunction in Aries. Mars-Saturn aspects are central to the Bond character since they represent the periodic testing (Saturn) of strength (Mars). The creator of the Bond myth, Gemini author Ian Fleming (May 28, 1908), built his franchised hero on his own Mars-Saturn square.

Transiting Saturn is now forming an exact trine to Craig's Mars-Saturn conjunction, so this part of his psyche provides an adventurous building block for the next Bond film. However, Craig is missing one of the most essential components of the Bond character, which is the flippant, multi-tasking, car-chasing exploits of Mars in Gemini, which both Pierce Brosnan and Sean Connery have.

Still, all the outer planets are making major hits to his personal horoscope, transforming him from an ordinary actor into a mythic superstar. Transiting Neptune is conjunct his Venus, bringing an aura of untouchable celebrity status, along with the famed mystique of the Bond girls. Next year, when "Casino Royale" is released in November, transiting Uranus will be conjunct his Sun, as he fulfills the role of being the Chosen One.
