Evo Morales, and the U.S. Nightmare in Bolivia

Bolivia's capitol La Paz has been the scene of strident protests over the last three weeks, as a collection of miners, peasants, and labor unions pressed their demands to nationalize the rich supply of natural gas resources. Sixty-five percent of Bolivia's nine million people are indigenous, and their growing political power represents a rebellion against U.S. diplomatic and economic influence that could spread across South America.

The leader of MAS, the socialist party that engineered the mass protest, is Evo Morales, who was born with a Sun-Mars conjunction in the warrior sign of Scorpio (October 26, 1959; Oruro, Bolivia; time unknown). This Sun-Mars placement accurately reflects Morales as a relentless activist. His Sun-Mars is also conjunct Neptune, giving him charisma, a general's strategic vision, and an underlying faith in his purpose.

Morales was born with Uranus in Leo, and though we don't have an accurate birth time, he also has Moon in Leo, which is likely positioned very close to Uranus. The Moon-Uranus combination is born to upset the status quo, to breathe new life into stagnant or corrupt systems. When transiting Uranus opposed its own place in 2001, Morales decided to run for President, and he did surprisingly well, coming in second.

The current protestors are demanding immediate general elections, after they successfully forced Bolivia's President to resign last week. Morales' horoscope is primed for success as his planet of revolution, Uranus, is very favorably excited by transiting Pluto (and his progressed Sun). He set the tone in a recent interview when he said, "We are the nightmare of the United States, all because we represent a new politics of life, a politics of defense of humanity."

Pension Plan Shortfalls

Last week General Motors, the world's largest automaker, announced plans to cut 25,000 manufacturing jobs. A major factor in GM's financial crunch is an underfinanced pension plan for its retirees. Ford and the major airline companies face similar shortfalls, while a federal pension guarantee agency estimated that pensions plans for millions of American workers are currently $500 billion in debt.

The U.S. Scorpio Rising horoscope reflects the ongoing pension plan crisis using at least three different indicators. The primary one, and the easiest to spot, is transiting Pluto's long-term opposition to the U.S. Mars, which is located in the eighth house of corporate holdings. Transiting Pluto (in the second house of the nation's assets) to Mars represents the transformation of the transportation industries, meaning life and death financial struggles.

Another indicator is transiting Uranus conjunct the U.S. Ceres. The asteroid Ceres is generically associated with the grains, and by extension, workers and the harvest. The harvest in economic terms refers to financial benefits, such as pensions. Transiting Uranus initiated contact with Ceres in March 2005 when the pension plan crisis first appeared. Transiting Uranus, the planet of crisis, remains near the U.S. Ceres through January 2006.

The third indicator is the U.S. progressed Venus, the natural ruler of money. Progressed Venus is heading for an opposition with natal Saturn, and will be exact in February 2006. Venus to Saturn signals economic hardship, with American institutions (Saturn) needing to make difficult decisions to fix economic problems. Social Security, Medicare, and pension plans are all likely candidates for problem areas that Congress needs to address.

Manu Ginobili, In a Rhythm

After Game #1 against the Detroit Pistons, San Antonia fans were comparing their star Argentinian guard to Michael Jordan. Manu Ginobili was in an extraordinary rhythm, especially in the fourth quarter when he went six-for-six on penetrating, gutsy drives and a three-pointer. He led all scores with 26 points, and makes San Antonio the odds-on favorite to win the NBA playoffs.

Emanuel Ginobili was born with his proud Leo Sun square Uranus (July 28, 1977; Bahia Blanca, Argentina; time unknown), giving him a quickness and unpredictability that is difficult to track, especially for those assigned to guard him. This Sun-Uranus connection bestows a self-confident, unique style that attracts fans all over the world. A lucky Venus-Jupiter conjunction adds to his popularity, and promises financial security.

As in all great athletes' horoscopes, Ginobili has a powerfully placed Mars, which is located in Gemini, the sign of the twins. The 6'6" guard can shoot with either hand, and confuses opponents by switching back and forth when driving through the lane. His Mars is reinforced by a network of aspects to all three outer planets, plus a close sextile to his Sun.

Progressing Ginobili's Mars can reveal clues about his expected performance. Last year his progressed Mars was conjunct magnetic Venus, a tremendously fortuitous alignment. He led the Argentinian basketball team to upset the Americans in the Summer Olympics. On the day he accepted the Gold Medal for his team, he was also married. Now his progressed Mars is conjunct sporty Jupiter, which is bringing him the superstar status he so richly deserves.
