The 2012 Predictions: You're Betting Your Life On It

If there's any truth to those ancient legends, you have precious little time left to make the most important wager of your life. Before dismissing this as new-age mumbo-jumbo, you'd best know exactly what's at stake.

A few nights ago my wife, Arianne, asked why I am taking so seriously the myth about the winter solstice of 2012 marking the end of the world as we know it. Although I gave the question my best shot at the time, all I got in return was a quizzical look and a shrug. I then promised to pull my thoughts together and make this the subject of my next column.

December 21, 2012 is a date that has been literally set in stone - it is the last date chiseled into the Mayan calendar. It is spoken of in the legends of other traditions as well and, according to some recent material I have been reading, has been part of the arcane knowledge of civilizations stretching back to Atlantis and Lemuria. Apparently some ancient people were privy to knowledge that remains largely unavailable to the majority of us today - even though we are the ones destined to live through this remarkable date. As one who has followed this subject for a number of years, I can add that the level of "chatter" - to borrow a term from the CIA - seems to be increasing at an impressive rate. Some of the latest material to cross my desk stopped me dead in my tracks (see: http://www.llresearch.org/transcripts/issues/2005/2005_1219.htm).

Should we treat the predicted demise of our civilization with disdain or with riveted attention? This question would not be so challenging if the prophecies were backed by verifiable scientific process. Thanks to modern-day advances in our understanding of the Earth's orbit, we can predict a total eclipse of the sun on November 13, 2012. We can even tell within seconds precisely when and where this event will occur. But when it comes to an event like the end of the world, science can't help us; the forces in play have yet to be discovered by classical academia.

Thus on this matter we are left to our own devices. All of us must work out a response as best we can. However, if there is any truth to the story, our stance - the most wager we ultimately make - regarding this issue is arguably the most important of our life. As C. S. Lewis, the celebrated author of The Chronicles of Narnia, once said about his decision to embrace religion: "Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The only thing it cannot be is moderately important."

There are several things to take into account before placing your bet. The first is to understand what is meant by "the end of the world." It clearly does not mean the planet will be destroyed, for that would take away all options in a single stroke, and the entire issue would be moot. That's not what the seers of the past were trying so hard to tell us. They were warning us of something entirely different - more like an abrupt shift in the direction of one's life.

Just as today's astronomers have a more expansive perspective on outer space than Galileo and Kepler did, so those throughout history who have been able to view earthly events from a cosmic point of view have had a broader understanding than most of us of the narrative of our planet through time. To illustrate, imagine that you are observing a steadily accelerating car from a helicopter several thousand feet above a three-lane highway. You can clearly see the road stretching to the horizon. Looking ahead, you notice that the road goes over a small rise and comes to a sudden fork where the lanes split sharply apart. Because the fork is hidden from the driver's view until the last instant, there will be no time for him or her to change lanes before the road divides. If the car is in the left lane, it must take the left fork; if it's in the right lane, it must go right. If it's in the center lane, it will crash into the dividing barrier. Those are the only alternatives. Based on the car's speed, you can calculate the precise instant it will arrive at the point of no return. How would you alert the driver to the imminent danger?

Such has been the dilemma of the cosmic seers. What is most compelling about their warnings is that many different visionaries have delivered the same message even though they apparently had absolutely no connection with each other. In other words, different seers throughout history have seen the same events coming to a head at exactly the same moment in linear time.

To carry the analogy further: Each of us is the driver of our own car. Since we have free will, we can opt to switch lanes at any time before reaching the fork in the road. According to the received teachings, the choice is simple: you can dedicate your life to the service of self, in which case you attempt to dominate and control others to gain personal power, or you can be in service to others, focusing each thought, word, and deed for the benefit of another being. The first choice (service to self) would put your car in the left lane; the second choice (service to others) equates to the right lane. Opting for neither keeps you locked in the center lane.

The teachings also tell us the consequences of each choice. The Earth, itself a sentient, conscious entity, has already chosen the right lane. Those of us who make the same choice will stay with her and move into the next density, or vibrational level of experience, which many call the golden age of love and peace. Those who choose the negative path (service to self) will be moved to a new planetary home where they can perfect the art of control. The beings that opt for neither fork will simply recycle the entire present human experience, beginning as prehumans who are subject to being preyed upon and controlled by those beings who opt for the negative path.

Before dismissing this as pure metaphysical mishmash, I suggest you consider the words of Blaise Pascal, the renowned French mathematician and philosopher who applied decision theory to the question of the existence of God. The result was the famous Pascal's Wager, which likens the matter to a yes/no bet - only instead of money, you are risking your eternal soul. According to Pascal, there are two propositions: God exists, and God does not exist. (Notably, Pascal understood God as the Christian God depicted in the Bible, which provides some information about God, but attempts no proof of his existence.) Pascal proposed that before placing your bet, you should consider the four possibilities:

  1. If you choose to believe in God, and if God exists, you go to heaven: your gain is infinite.
  2. If you choose to believe in God, and if God doesn't exist, your loss is finite and therefore negligible.
  3. If you choose not to believe in God, and if God doesn't exist, your gain is finite and therefore negligible.
  4. If you choose not to believe in God, and if God exists, you will go to hell: your loss is infinite.

Pascal's notes, which appear in his unfinished treatise Pensées, wrap it all up neatly: "Let us weigh the gain and the loss in wagering that God is. Let us estimate these two chances. If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing. Wager, then, without hesitation that He is."

I suggest applying the same logic to the possibility of a major shift in 2012. We can only assume that the information is either true or not true. And all four of Pascal's options apply. For me, the only course of action that resonates with my inner being is to act as if the proposed events and are accurate.

This is similar to having a physician tell you that you have only six months (or in this case six years) to live. Many people who have received such dire news have managed to not only live the most present and exquisite six months of their lives but, because of the palpable shift in their lifestyles, some even reversed their medical condition. The predictions for 2012 are, as it were, giving us just a few more years to live. We can cower through them in fear and denial, or we can accept this as an invitation to live more fully and purposefully than we ever have before.

In my own case, the consequence is that an overriding thought now drives my every waking moment: how can I further help to shift the consciousness of humanity? These words barely capture what I truly feel. There is so much more I want to convey, but like my six and a half billion fellow travelers on this planet, I am still learning to use the language of the heart.

I have been reading more and more articles about 2012 and the Mayan calendar. It's interesting how things that I have read in the past few years such as "How to know God" by Deepak Chopra and "The Celestine Prophecies" are now making more sense to me. There seems to be a link, in addition to a very reassuring message rather than one of doom and gloom. These do not have to be a difficult times if one is prepared to move to a higher vibrational frequency. Thank you for your enlightening article.

I believe there is a universal consciousness that is slowly awakening in the minds of everyone, at different rates depending on the person's will to let go of conventional and acculturated knowledge in favor of a new philosophy, whatever it may be that works for them. The important thing is that a universal spiritual awakening is happening in the first place. I believe 2012 is somehow connected with a "mass awakening" of humanity;some form of alignment between humanity's religious, philosophical, and spiritual boundaries. I feel that whatever events take place on 2012, all people will understand more about our role in the flow of time, and the importance of our destinies as spiritual creations of a higher power. To sum it up, I think something or another is going to give us all a nice reality check and we're going to drop all the petty games and heed the call to a higher purpose. Maybe we will discover some hidden truth that will set us free...

The 2012 prediction read was awesome. I, too, feel something inevitable soon will happen. We are here, now, to remember that we are all in this together, as one being.

I am a 72 year old Grandmother and I only wish that I could have realized earlier in my life how important it is to help each other more. May the Light of the Love of God surround you always and fill your heart.

I too sense something profound is upon us. Soon we will have answers if we are ready to receive the truth. Death becomes us all at some point. So why all the scare all the sudden. Is it the not knowing what or knowing what to expect that scares us most? A spiritual awakening in the world would be a great gift to all of us. I guess only time holds the truth and ones self can worry about 2012; or just be ready whenever death may become us weather it is today, tomorrow, 2012, or etc. It's really a personal truth to oneself to be aware that ones life is not promised by a date but by ones belief. Good luck to everyone on their own life journeys. Myanrain

I have recently become interested in the prophecies about the year 2012. The real problem I have found is there is no real consistency about the predictions. Will there be meteor showers, will the poles shift, and will there be earth quakes? What exactly causes all these events? Is it because the Earth is in the center of the Universe? If so, the universe is ever expanding, so where is the center. I know for sure that we are entering the last chapter in mans dictatorship of this Earth. I would like to know if this date 2012 is the middle of the tribulation period or the very beginning. The Bible is fairly clear in the fact that in the middle of the tribulation period there will be untold misery. A few examples are meteor showers, two thirds of the waters turning blood red and tasting like worm wood, and insects like locusts tormenting men. Any additional information would be appreciated.

I'm a 14 year old boy, but the Mayan Calendar stated that on 9/11/2001 two birds would destroy a city, but they didn't destroy a city. They destroyed the hearts of a city. So, maybe this all isn't true. They could be wrong right? If the world was to end maybe it won’t be destroyed, just the things we held dear. They were wrong once. Can’t they be wrong again? I have been looking into this "end of the world" thing for two years now, and I want a straight answer for all this. Is it going to end or not? All of these websites don't give a straight answer. They beat around the bush. So I want an answer. No lies.

By DeVryGuy 2007-11-11 09:24:39

Dear 14 year old. I have been studying religious experiences and human interaction for many years. Back in the late 1960's, I was interested in the news of the day and the predictions and forecasts of worldly events, much as todays predictions of the end of times and plagues. Most have never come true, but some have in as much as we can associate past events with non-concrete antidotes. Whether we believe that the catastrophic events are going to happen or not, I feel that there is little that we as individuals can do about it. Consider yourself as a passenger in a plane that is presumably about to crash, is there anything you can do other than, of course, try to get to the controls and land the plane safely. But here we are talking metaphorically. I believe and hope that some event in 2012 will come to pass. I feel the we, as human kind have been on a downhill slide for many centuries. We have lost much of what it means to be righteous beings, humble, and fearful of God. Look at the Amish for example. Now, I personally couldn't switch my modern convenience lifestyle for their more simple one. I have visited several Mennonite communities, but you must have respect for their convictions and dedication to their religion and lifestyle. If some major catastrophe does occur, then it will likely be people like the Amish that will "inherit" the earth, for they will be among the few that are capable of existing for long periods of time on meager necessities. Just some food for thought. It is actually refreshing to know that someone from a younger generation is actually thinking about something other that what Britany is doing. The latest rap songs and other trash that is chipping away at the very foundation of our society.

Namaste, my goodness, well done. You have put this so succinctly. I have read so many conflicting stuff on 2012. You captured the gist so well that there is really nothing else to add. I personally believe it is a wake up a call to live in loving harmony or perish with ignorance. I choose the first. It is really refreshing to read from the young man too. He has been researching it for two years that's deep, he is definitely going places. I cannot wait for the change to take place, because the earth needs to be purged of so much evil. Love, light and peace.

By col 2008-05-06 06:23:14

I do believe this is very important stuff, I have a wife a three year old daughter and a baby on the way. How can we prepare ourselves for these changes? I don't want my family to be caught up in the wrong lane, I've always wondered how we would get by if society broke, not just the struggle to find food but the affect it would have on peoples personalities and how people can turn quite evil when pushed to these limits. Should we just be satisfied with living life for the here and now and accept the fact that many or if not all of us are just waiting for infinite doom? How can we learn to move to a higher vibrational frequency as Katrina Abbot spoke of.

By D. 2008-05-06 06:43:16

Hi Col. Katrina mentioned the following in her post, "How to know God" by Deepak Chopra and "The Celestine Prophecies" are now making more sense to me." Reading these may be a good place to start. Also the writer of the Article is Jean-Claude Koven who also wrote, "Going Deeper:How to Make Sense of Your Life When Your Life Makes No Sense.

Hello enlightened people, I believe that the end of the world is coming for sure, but I don't really care when exactly this end will be. What it is important to me is to keep my faith, and to be always sure that each day I am doing my best for myself, for people whom I love, to all man kind and to the earth. To consider each day as your last chance to do your best and to be able to sleep each night being ready to go and not to wake up the next morning. Only this way you can be truly free and you can be a survivor wherever you are now and wherever you might be next. Bless you all.

By DG-GD 2008-05-27 06:13:32

Excuse me but why do older people always assume that young people only care about Brittany spears and the latest rap song, I care about them well not so much Brittany, but this 2012 is really bothering me. Like the 14 year old boy who said he has been researching and has yet to find an answer. Let me remind all of you that the world was supposed to end in 2000 but did it? No every one on here seems to be a devout Christian but they don't know that the Bible says that no one will know when the world ends?

By Tonya 2008-05-30 19:48:44

I recently heard of the 13 sculls and the end in 2012. The earth changes. Throughout time it shifted continents from earth quakes, volcanoes, etc. It has been happening since before the dinosaurs. It has nothing to do with God's wrath. God is love and light from which we all came. He has no revenge on humanity. It is an experience for all of us. What ever happens in 2012 will be a positive thing for humanity. Remember how we all came together on 9/11. It will happen again on this event. It will be a spiritual awakening. Religion won't be what is most important. It will be the belief in a greater power a higher vibration. The ability to see life in everything. To see the light in everything. To remind us that we are loved and we can love everything in front of us. See everything with new eyes. Without fear or hate but instead positive thinking, and energy. It will be fine if the world is not coming to an end but to a beginning.

By T. White 2008-06-18 03:43:20

Change is inevitable. The only thing which does not change, is the fact that everything changes. Surely the Earth cannot go on much longer with humans raping it the way they are. So, either there will be severe Earth changes or a shift in consciousness. In the end, it doesn't matter. Who you really are cannot "die", but rather transform. Once this is really seen, there is no fear of death. The fear of death transformation comes from the same "mind" which is systematically destroying that which it needs for continued life on Earth. My readings indicate that the Mayans speak of 2012 as the end of the world "as we know it". What this feels like is a dramatic shift in consciousness as the old ego-based ways of looking at life fall away and are transformed into living in love and Truth. Some years ago I felt compelled to move to a relatively peaceful country far from cities. I feel that we may be challenged in many ways in the next 4 years. As the writer indicates in this wonderful article, there is something of a choice involved. If you prefer to move through the transition of the ages rather than to undergo physical death, then NOW is the time to switch lanes. Once you switch, don't even so much as look into the other lane, you could be pulled back before you are aware of it. These are exciting times as Awareness remembers Itself in billions of seemingly separate bodies. The truth is, that you never were separate. It's part of the Illusion which is about to drop away.

I to have been researching and have come to the conclusion that everything in the universe goes through cycles. Maybe the Maya and the other ancient cultures had discovered this cycle. And left clues so we to could learn of it. The scary thing is, we don't know exactly what this is a cycle of. A natural progression of changes like the seasons, from spring, to summer, to fall, to winter? I tend to think not. It seems to be more of a cycle of destruction. There is a lot of scars on the earth of past destruction. I believe it is a warning of the next impending disaster. The Maya were astronomers, they were obsessed with the stars and planets. So to were many of the other ancient cultures. It isn't by chance that 12/21/12 is the date of a major astronomical event. I believe that whatever happens it will be caused from something in the universe, not something on earth. And the results will be devastating to life on earth. It will be a very hard time for everyone here. I don't want to bring anyone down, but you can not change the cycles of the universe by "thinking good thoughts" Whatever is going to happen will happen regardless of how positive we are. I believe in one thing, the golden rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. That solves all of humanities problems in one shot. Don't get me wrong all of this enlightenment and kindness is a great thing, something long overdue in our society. However, I think the cycle is a cycle of a planetary body, comet, dwarf star, or maybe the planetary alignment itself. And all the kindness in the world isn't going to change that. It will however make this a little nice place to live up until then, so please continue on. This world needs more people like all of you.
