Homemade Essential Oil Recipes: Soothe Muscle Aches with Herbal Pain Relief Remedies

My husband got a little carried away on Earth Day. He wanted to 'save' all the leftover seedlings from a tree giveaway he had been participating in. He proudly handed me 68 trees to plant on our rocky hillside. He had to rush off to work that day, so it was my job to plant them. Boy, was I sore that night!

A good warm soak was just what my tired muscles needed! Homemade bath salts are an inexpensive and easy to make a treat for yourself or your loved ones. Be sure to use only essential oils, and not fragrance oils, which are likely to be synthetic. Enjoy my essential oil recipes!

Homemade Bath Salts for Muscle Aches

  • 2 cups Epsom salts
  • 6 drops rosemary essential oil *
  • 6 drops German chamomile essential oil
  • 3 drops lavender essential oil

Add essential oils to the Epsom salts, stirring well. After the salts have dried completely, store them in an airtight container. If moisture gets in, the salts will clump, however they will still be usable.

Healing Properties of Essential Oils

  • German Chamomile soothes inflammation.
  • Lavender is relaxing, and also has anti-inflammatory properties.
  • The rosemary has warming qualities, and increases bloodflow.

* Those with epilepsy should not use rosemary. Thyme, myrtle or peppermint may be substituted.

Arnica Montana as a Natural Pain Relief Remedy

To rub on minor aches, I usually reach for arnica gel. Arnica is a homeopathic remedy. It comes in a topical gel or ointment, and in tiny round pellets, which are taken orally.

Massage oils can be made with essential oils. Remember, essential oils must be diluted with a carrier oil, before applying topically.

Muscle Warming Homemade Massage Oil

  • 1 T. sweet almond oil (those with nut allergies should substitute another extra-virgin or cold pressed vegetable oil.)
  • 2 drops lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops myrtle essential oil
  • 3 drops thyme essential oil

Warm the oil in your hands, and then massage the oil into the affected area, using circular motions. Thyme increases bloodflow to the muscles. Myrtle works as a mild analgesic, and increases bloodflow.

The above recipes are for minor muscle aches, not for muscles that are swollen. If your muscles are swollen, they may be torn or sprained and should be kept elevated with a cold compress, and you should see a physician. Certain essential oils may irritate sensitive skins.

With essential oils on hand, you can make these recipes on the spot, as needed. Try them after starting a new exercise routine, or next time you‘re given a whole bunch of trees to plant. Your muscles will thank you.
