Advantages of Organic Food

The advantages of organic food are multidimensional and highly supportive of good health. According to the official definition from Cambridge Dictionary, Organic means "not using artificial chemicals in the production of plants and animals for food." Therefore it is evident that much care is taken when growing and creating natural organic foods. But this care is not without purpose for there are many benefits to eating organic food.

The first and foremost benefit is that the organic food developed in organic hydroponic greenhouses, for example, is healthier than the products harvested from the usual and conventional forms of farming. This is because the average farmer often uses toxic anti-pest fertilizers to enhance production. The toxic elements end up as part of our food and the implications of their effect in the long run are still not completely understood. This toxic burden also harms the natural supplies of drinking water and deactivates the usefulness of soil.

The Advantages of Organic Food was recognized by the FDA and after a legal battle of about 10 long years the FDA's, " The Natural Organic Standards Act," was ultimately introduced in February 10, 2001. According to the new law the term "organic" specifies:

  • Product must contain only organically produced raw or processed material, excluding water and salt.
  • Product must be at least 95 percent organically produced ingredients. Remainder must be made up of nonagricultural substances or products approved on the USDA's National List.
  • Products meeting these requirements must display the terms on their principal display panel.
  • USDA seal and the seal or mark of certifying agents may appear on packages and in advertisements.

Organic hydroponics naturally support bio diversity since the absence of pesticides and herbicides encourages wildlife. These are some of the major advantages of organic food. More growers are becoming conscious of growing organics as the public awareness grows and demands healthier foods.

Hi Kusemererwa. There are many advantages to organic foods. For instance, the organic produce contains more minerals and antioxidants. Meats do not contain antibiotics or hormones. Organic foods also do not contain laundry lists of additives. In addition, they are not full of genetically modified food stuffs. We still don't know what the long term consequences of these foods will be. Also, organic growing methods are more environmentally friendly.

Can you grow 100 percent organic food with hydroponics? Can you sell this food as organically grown? Are the nutrients natural or artificial?
